![]() Regarding the independent variables the most studied variables with regard to success factors in football are shots and shots on goals followed by variables like goal efficiency (number of goals divided by shots), passing, and possession ( Sarmento et al., 2014 Lepschy et al., 2018). Therefore, more research is needed to close this gap in possible unidentified success factors.īesides a careful consideration of independent variables, a meaningful dependent variable needs to be selected. Moreover, in most studies, only a small selection of variables was used, and a possible effect of the home advantage was not always considered. None of those studies about World Cup matches used market value as an independent variable. Of these studies, only six used a predictive study design compared with 24 studies about club teams, which can provide more sophisticated conclusions ( Lepschy et al., 2018). Only 11 studies involving data of success factors from a World Cup were published in recent years ( Lepschy et al., 2018). Most studies focused on domestic leagues consisting of club teams, while studies on the performance of national teams at tournaments are sparse. Various attempts have been undertaken to identify and quantify indicators of performance, but results vary and are partly inconsistent. This understanding is in football as crucial as in other sports, but it is still a challenge to determine what leads to success in football. To understand the mechanisms underlying success in football is critical for coaches, players, managers, journalists, and other stakeholders. The study contributes to a better understanding of success factors and can help to improve effectiveness of training, match preparation, and coaching. Moreover, the results suggest that direct play and pressing were more effective than ball possession play. Overall, most of the critical success factors and those with the highest impact on winning close games were defensive actions. Ball possession, distance, and market value of the teams had no influence on success. The results showed that defensive errors ( p = 0.0220), goal efficiency ( p = 0.0000), duel success ( p = 0.0000), tackles success ( p = 0.0100), shots from counterattacks ( p = 0.0460), clearances ( p = 0.0130), and crosses ( p = 0.0160) have a significant influence on winning a match during those tournaments. ![]() Twenty-nine variables were identified from previous research. A typical example is Abbeyfield, a UK-based care home charity, which recently introduced five of its elderly residents in Westbourne, Bournemouth in Dorset, to Google’s virtual assistant Home. The tendency, to date, has been to keep it simple. These limitations have not stopped a number of care providers experimenting with AI in the alleviation of loneliness. “If the elderly individual tells the agent about a sad event, such as her neighbour breaking her hip, the agent should reply with compassion, sadness and maybe surprise, but certainly not happiness,” says Zaïane. Advances in predictive modelling and machine-learning are slowly improving the ability of chatbots to detect emotion in printed text, as in Ana’s case, although most of the early running depends on facial expressions and other stimuli. Many of these challenges circle back to AI’s innate lack of emotional intelligence. To make genuine connections, Ana’s conversations have to be grammatically correct, on topic, personalised, responsive to mood (happy, sad, bored), reflective of tone (interrogative, imperative, declarative) and potentially humorous, to name just a few requirements. To ensure its chat is open ended and engaging, Zaïane’s team are feeding the bot weeks’ worth of content from films and TV series.īut challenges remain numerous. Zaïane is currently developing a loneliness-beating chatbot for the elderly named Ana. So argues Dr Osmar Zaïane, professor at the University of Alberta and director at Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute. That makes them different from virtual assistants, such as Siri, Alexa or Google Duplex, which essentially act as pre-programmed information retrieval agents. To be effective, these bots can’t just be clever they need to be companionable. Loneliness-beating AI adds another layer of complexity to existing health-focused bots, which tend to assist with functional tasks such as reminding users to take their medication and scheduling doctor’s appointments. “Mitsuku doesn’t pretend to be able to replace a real person, but she’s always available if anyone needs her, instead of talking to the four walls,” says Steve Worswick, senior AI designer at Pandorabots, maker of the prize-winning chatbot. Mitsuku is equipped with more than 80 billion conversation logs, a data arsenal that has helped her become five-times winner of the prestigious Loebner Prize for chatbot developers. Mitsuku is one of an emerging crop of smart, talking algorithms designed to stave off feelings of loneliness, especially among homebound individuals such as the elderly and disabled.Īs with all AI solutions, she relies of machine-learning to augment her speech and perfect conversational style. With around one third of the world population currently subject to self-isolation, the spectre of loneliness, which according to Cigna’s 2020 Loneliness Index regularly affects as many as three in five adult Americans, is looming large.Įnter Mitsuku, or Kuki to her close friends. Mitsuku: “What do you call a chatbot that moves?” Respondent: “What?” Mitsuku: “A walkie-talkie.” OK, so it may not be the funniest joke in the world, but it is not bad for a 15-year-old piece of artificially intelligent coding. ![]() ![]() ![]() These brainwaves are also associated with some forms of deep meditation and physical regeneration which happens during sleep. Delta waves produce deep and dreamless sleep and are generally associated with states of unconsciousness. Different states of awareness and physical arousal, from blood pressure to the perception of pain, are affected by brainwaves in a specific range of Hz.īrainwaves are named after letters in the Greek alphabet.ĭelta waves are the slowest brainwave state, occurring in the range of 0.5 to 3.5 Hz. ![]() Our brain cells, known as neurons, send messages to each other using electro-chemical impulses called brainwaves, which can be measured on the scalp using an electroencephalogram, or EEG machine. Binaural meditation music is one specific type of music using binaural frequencies to enhance the meditative experience. In these specially engineered soundtracks, the binaural tones are fully embedded in musical compositions, creating a blend of soothing or uplifting music with the added benefit of entraining brainwaves to a desired frequency. Listening to specific binaural beat soundtracks can ease your mind into the brain waves of deep sleep, calm meditation, insightful creativity, or energized problem-solving.īinaural pulses also mix well with relaxing music. This affects our moods, how we feel physically, our ability to learn and retain new information, and potentially opens the door to spiritual, emotional, and mental insights. Our brainwave frequencies determine our level of mental arousal and our state of consciousness. ![]() A similar process happens when we listen to music, drumming, or chanting and explains why some music can be so powerful in affecting how we feel.īinaural soundtracks only work to entrain brainwaves if the two auditory tones produce a beat in the range of human brainwave frequencies, which in most cases is between 0.5 and 30 Hz.įor example, if your left ear hears a tone with a frequency of 300 Hz and your right ear hears a tone of 314 Hz, your mind will perceive a beat of the difference between these two numbers, a pulsing tone of 14 Hz. This pulsing tone then causes your brain waves to synchronize with the frequency of the perceived, illusory sound in a process known as frequency following response. The binaural pulse is actually a mental illusion and state of mind and not a real auditory sound being heard by your ears. When you put on a set of headphones and listen to a binaural beat soundtrack, the two separate tones delivered to your ears become one beat frequency inside the auditory center in your mid-brain, resulting in a third, pulsing tone which is the actual binaural beat. Hz is merely an abbreviation for the word hertz, a unit of measurement of electrical vibration measured in oscillations per second. These separate tones are known as the carrier frequencies or carrier tones.įor the binaural tone to be perceived in the mind, the carrier tones must be of the same amplitude and differ from one another by approximately 40 Hz or less in frequency. This research continues to this day.īinaural literally means “two ears,” and this refers to the fact that binaural pulses involve separate tones heard by each ear. Oster published his findings in a paper in the science journal Scientific American, leading to an avalanche of further research and discoveries on the neuroscience of how listening to binaural tones can affect the mind, mood, and behavior of human beings. Oster explored the nature and uses of binaural sounds, discovering that when the difference in frequency between the two tones is in the range of human brain waves, the listener’s brain waves synchronize with this frequency in a process known as brain wave entrainment. In 1973, an American psychology researcher named Gerald Oster rekindled Dove’s discovery and took it to the next level. This phenomenon was first discovered in 1839 by a German scientist named Heinrich Wilhelm Dove, although the uses and benefits of Dove’s discovery remained unappreciated until the 1970s. Binaural beat technology allows the listener to achieve a specific, desired state of mind and a desired mental or physiological effect. A binaural beat is a pulsing sound perceived in the mind when each ear hears a separate tone of two slightly differing frequencies. ![]() ![]() ![]() Of course, I’ve already mentioned that Atom has great extensions in general, but syntax highlighting is an important feature regardless of what language you're typing. Atom's community provides great support for my favorite formats. While XML support is relatively common, integration with a specific schema can be a tall order, and Asciidoc is still relatively obscure. When I evaluate an editor, Docbook schema and Asciidoc support are two of my primary metrics. By extension, I’m a fan of its simplified front-end, Asciidoc. You can practically make Atom the control hub for your desktop, so you rarely have to leave it. There are extensions to add syntax highlighting for languages and formats, to add dynamic linting, and to integrate debuggers, runtime environments, video and music player controls, and much more. It shows how important extensions can be, though, and Atom has a nice set of plugins. That’s a hard act to top, and to be honest, I’ve yet to see the editor that can. My habitual editor is GNU Emacs, which has a mind-boggling array of extensions so versatile that they can provide everything from an email client to a video game. When most requirements have been filled as soon as you launch the application, a major factor in "selling" an open source text editor is its extensions. That’s a hard line to walk, but Atom manages it, and I appreciate it for that. It’s just different enough to feel unique but "safe" enough to trick people into believing (and rightly so) they can use it. If I take a few minutes to show them a few power features of the application, then they're quickly empowered to install new plugins and discover useful features they enjoy. No new keyboard shortcuts to learn, no serious deviations from user interface conventions. One of my favorite things about Atom is that it feels pretty "normal." I can install Atom on anyone’s computer and they’re off and typing in no time. Github sadly discontinued support of Atom back in 2022, but it was open source and it's a good editor, so it's not surprising that it found new life as the Pulsar text editor. I often come back to Atom, though, because, as a user of open source, I have the luxury of using an application just because I can. Nephrologists examining urine sediment are more likely to identify clinically important findings as compared to laboratory technicians in some disease settings. In human medicine, the need for trained specialists to perform urine sediment examination as a biomarker for kidney disease continues to be emphasized, especially in patients with acute kidney injury ( AKI). In human medicine, the leukocyte esterase test pad is valuable to prompt microscopic sediment evaluation, but this reaction is not useful in veterinary medicine (see Chapter 5). Abnormal elements in urine sediment are more likely to be found during microscopy when urine has an abnormal color (colorless, very dark yellow, red, brown), if the urine is cloudy, if the USG is lower than normal, if USG is extremely high, or if the reagent pads on the dry reagent strip pad are positive for abnormalities (e.g. Macroscopic screening of urine based on its physical and chemical properties is sometimes used in human medicine to decide if urine sediment examination will be cost‐effective. Urine sediment examination has been referred to as the “liquid kidney biopsy”, but it also often reflects disorders of the lower urinary tract, so the moniker “liquid urinary tract biopsy” may be more apt. How the urine is mixed, what volume is centrifuged, the force of centrifugation, and the volume of sediment examined all should be standardized to obtain repeatable and accurate results. In veterinary medicine, standard manual urine microscopy has a within‐run coefficient of variation ( CV) of 30–40% for red blood cells ( RBC) and WBC. Failure to perform urine sediment microscopy can be attributed to the perception that it takes too much time (approximately 20 minutes to perform a complete urinalysis) and concern about the skill level and experience necessary for in‐clinic technicians to proficiently perform a urinalysis. White blood cells ( WBC), bacteria, fungal organisms, epithelial cells, crystals, and casts are not detected using dry‐reagent strip pad analysis. Unfortunately, urinary microscopy is often omitted in veterinary practice, which can result in failure to identify important diagnostic information. It is preferable to perform the complete urinalysis in‐house, though urine microscopy was considered optional by one veterinary author if the urinary chemistry reagent pads were all normal and there were no abnormalities in color or clarity of the urine specimen. ![]() Microscopic examination of the urine sediment should always be performed as part of the complete urinalysis, especially in animals that are sick and those that have abnormal color or clarity, abnormalities detected on chemical dipstrip testing (see Chapter 5), lower than expected urine specific gravity ( USG) ( Chapter 4), or on physical examination findings.
